Tonicity and osmoregulation Flashcards
1
Q
Isotonic solutions
A
No net movement of water, concentration of solutes is the same concentration as the water
2
Q
Hypertonic solutions
A
- Lose water due to their extracellular surroundings
- Solute levels higher outside of the cell
- Water leaves the cell and cells shrivel and die
3
Q
Hypotonic solutions
A
- Gain water
- Solute levels lower outside of the cell
- Water flows into the cell, cells swell and lyse (pop)
4
Q
Water potential
A
Physical property that predicts the direction water will flow
5
Q
Water will flow from areas of
A
- High water potential to low water potential
- Low solute to areas of high solute concentration
- High pressure to low pressure
