Chemistry Review Flashcards
Matter
Anything that takes up space and has mass
Element
A substance that cannot be broken into other substances by chemical reactions
Compound
Substance consisting of two or more elements combined in a fixed ratio
Essential Elements
20-25% of the 92 naturally essential elements are essential to survive and reproduce
Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorous, Nitrogen
Trace Elements
Required by an organism in very small quantities, (Zinc, Iron)
Elements want to be
stable
How do elements become stable?
By forming chemical bonds with other elements
Chemical bonds
Attraction between two atoms, resulting from the sharing or transferring of valence electrons
Electronegativity
Measure of an atoms ability to attract electrons to itself
Covalent bonds
When two or more atoms share electrons: single, double, and triple bonds
Nonpolar covalent
Electrons shared equally between two atoms
Polar covalent
Electrons not shared equally between two atoms
Ionic bonds
Attraction between oppositely charged atoms (usually between a metal and non-metal)
Cation
Positively charged ion
Anion
Negatively charged ion
