To what extent do nationalists have a similar view of society Flashcards
para 1 agree (principles and key traits)
All nationalists believe that society is held together by widely held ideas and principles and that society is defined in terms of key traits. Thinkers like Garvey, Mazzini, Herder and Maurras are all different nationalists but agree that these values are crucial to the nation
para 1 disagree (multi vs mono)
Liberal nationalists would argue that a number of different cultures and values can exist in a nation. Individuals like JJR support this progressive idea of multi-culturalism. On the other hand, conservative nationalists like Maurras and Herder support mono-culturalism, seeing that these particular traditions are what allow people together and that other cultures are not relevant (mono-culturalism)
para 2 agree (shared vision)
Nationalists believe that people should be committed to a shared vision of society. JJRs idea of civic loyalty finds agreement with Maurras’ integral nationalism (totally immersed people)
para 2 disagree (basis of vision)
Whilst JJR would argue that shared histories and experiences are not important, Herder and Maurras say the nation is defined by cultures and past experiences (volksgeist)
para 3 agree (freedom and self determination)
Society should be free and have liberties (self-determination). Mazzini, Rousseau and Garvey all find agreement here.
para 3 disagree
Conservative chauvinistic nationalists argue that some nations are naturally entitled to these and some are not (maurras)
