Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) characterized by
Sudden, unilateral recurrent p! along trigeminal nerve
Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) related too
Shingles, multiple sclerosis, or cerebellar or brainstem masses
TN1 manifestations
Abrupt onset of waves
TN1 mainfestations s/s
Burning
knifelike
Lightning-like shock in lips, upper/lower gums, forehead
Acute attack of TN1
facial twitching, grimacing, frequent blinking and tearing
TN1 pain starts
with trigger
seconds- 2 to 3 minutes
Stimuli of TN1 includes
chewing, brushing teeth, hot or cold blast of air, washing the face, yawning, or talking
TN diagnosis
based on history & symptoms
Neuro exam; MRI
Goal of care:
pain relief
Drug therapy for TN
Anti-seizure drugs
Tricyclic antidepressants
Local nerve block (botox)
Pt education for TN
Nutrition; easy to chew food; lukewarm; high protein
NGT on unaffected side
Hygiene
Dental visits semiannually
