MS Flashcards
Characterized by disseminated demyelination of nerve fibers of brain and spinal cord
MS
Risk factors for MS
Smoking Infection Physical Injury Emotional Stress Excessive Fatigue Pregnancy Poor stage for health
3 characteristics of MS
chronic inflammation
Demylenation
Gliosis (scarring) in CNS
What does MS attack?
Myelin sheaths of neurons in brain & spinal cord
Visual manifestations
Nystagumus
Dipolopia
Blurred vision
Speech/throat manifestations
Dysarthria
Dysphagia
Sensation manifestations
P!
Parethesias
Lhermittes sign
Dizziness
Musculoskeletal manifestations
Weakness
Spasm
Tremors
Ataxia
CNS system
fatigue
Cognitive impairment
depression
unstable mood
Onset is
insidious & gradual
First symptoms may include:
Blurred vision/double vision
Red-green color distortion
Blindness in one eye
Motor manifestations
Weakness
Spasticity of muscle
Scanning speech
Electric shock/pins & needles when pt flexes neck
Lhermittes
Cognitive manifestations; difficulty with
Short term memory Attention Info processing Planning Visual perception Word finding
Diagnosis; pt has to have what?
evidence of at least 2 inflammatory demyelination in at least 2 different locations in CNS
Early intervention is
KEY
Interprofessional Care
Exercise; water therapy
- decrease spasticity
- Increases coordination
- Retrains unaffected muscles
What are we going to ask?
climate changes
Any vaccination?
Elimination?
Implementation
Avoid fatigue
Extremes hot/cold
Exposure to infection
Teaching patient
good balance of exercise/rest
Minimize caffeine intake
Self-cath
High fiber
Worried about at home?
Decrease injury at home
TN
Facial P!; Cranial nerve 5
Bells palsy
Drooping face; eye can’t close; asymmetric face Cranial Nerve 7
Dry eye
Glasses
Trouble sleeping
Parkinson’s
TRAP; fall risk; swallowing; disturbed sleep
MS main focus
vision changes; fatigue; autoimmune-triggers (infection; changes in temperature)
