Tissues of the Body Flashcards
This type of tissue is found in the lungs and blood vessels where diffusion must happen quickly
simple squamous
Ground substance can take on these main 3 types of consistency
fluid, gelatinous, hard (calcified)
This is how epithelial tissue is classified
according to # of cell layers and cell shape
These are the four types of tissue in our body
epithelial, connective, nervous, muscle
This epithelial tissue has many layers, but the cells at the top are rounded, yet can become squamous
transitional
This connective tissue is avascular and has no nerves
cartilage
The epithelial tissue found in the small intestine where absorption of nutrients must take place is
non-ciliated simple columnar (no cilia, instead there is microvilli)
The 5 types of connective tissue are
loose, dense, cartilage, blood and bone
What are tissues?
collections of similar cells that work together for a specialized function
The two main types of epithelial tissue are…
covering and lining and glandular
Why is epithelial tissue subject to disease
it covers and lines the body leaving it susceptible to wear and tear and thus it is always renewing to make more cells (mitosis). Cancer happens when this division is not controlled.
Simple columnar ciliated would be found in what two places in your body?
fallopian tubes, respiratory tract
Where would transitional epithelial tissue be found?
the bladder and uterus, areas that require stretching
Which tissue is this?
cartilage
Which tissue is this?
Adipose (fat)
What is the job of a mast cell?
it produces heparin and histamin.
What does heparin do?
it prevents your blood from clotting (anticoagulant)
What is the job of histamine
causes allergic symtoms of inflammation and constrictionof smoooth muscle
What is the difference between the cells in epithelial tissue and connective tissue?
ET cells are closely packed and CT cells are not!
What are the 5 general characteristics of epithelial tissue?
- closely packed cells
- avascular
- nerve supply
- 3 surfaces: apical (top), lateral (side), basal (bottom)
- high capacity for renewal
What epithelial tissue is found in the kidney tubules
siimple cuboidal
Where would you find statified squamous epithelial tissue?
the skin, the vagina, the mouth (areas that need protection)
What are some functions of epithelial tissue?
diffusion, osmosis, filtration, secretion, absorption, protection, controlling permeability
What are some characterisics of connective tissue?
- not found on surfaces
- vascular except for cartilage
- nerve supply except for cartilage
- fibrous
- 2 basic elements: cells and extracellular matrix
What is the job of a plasma cells?
to secrete antibodies to help fight off infections
What is the job of a macrophage?
These are the “big” cell eaters. They engulf foreign substances and dead cells
What type of tissue stores calcium, red marrow and yellow marrow?
bone connective tissue
The type of connective tissue found underneath the skin is
Areolar (loose)
Which epithelial tissue has nuclei at all different levels and has cilia at the apical layer
pseudostratified
The cell responsible for production and maintenance of fibers and ground substance
Fibroblast
