Tissues concepts Flashcards
Name the four basic types of tissues that make up the human body, and state the characteristics of each.
1.Epithelium=dense, avascular, no nerves
2. Connective Tissue=well spaced out, vascular, innervated
3. Muscle Tissue=elasticity, extensibility, contractility, Excitability
4. Nervous Tissue=excitable and capable of sending and receiving electrochemical signals that provide the body with information.
State the main differences between epithelial and connective tissues.
Epithelia:
Strong direction
Avascular
No nerves
Dense, tightly packed
Connective:
No direction
Blood
innervated
Well spaced out
Describe the general features of epithelial tissue.
Epithelial tissue covers the body surface and organs, lines body cavities and hollow organs, composes glands, has a free surface, is anchored to underlying connective tissue by a basement membrane, lacks blood vessels, cells readily divide, and cells are tightly packed.
Contrast covering and lining epithelia with glandular epithelia
The covering and lining epithelia sits on top of the basement membrane, whereas the glandula epithelia is below the basement membrane. The glandular epithelia specializes in secretion, whereas the lining epithelia covers organs.
Describe the properties of the different types of epithelial tissues.
The tissues are named based on shape with squamous being pancake-like, cuboidal being cube-like, and columnar being pillar-like. They are also named by their arrangement with simple being one layer, pseudostratified being cells appearing to be layered but all of them connecting at the base and stratified being two or more layers. Simple and Pseudostratified tissues may be ciliated meaning with cilia or nonciliated, meaning having microvilli
