Epithelial Membranes Flashcards
What is a membrane
The membrane is the thin layer that forms the outer boundary of a living cell or of an internal cell compartment.
Mucous membrane
the epithelial membrane that lines body cavities that open to the outside. Epithelium with tight junctions over a basement membrane and usually areolar connective tissue (lamina propria)
Serous membrane
lines body cavities (parietal) that do not open to the outside, and surround organs inside those cavities (visceral). Simple squamous epithelium over areolar connective tissue. Secretes fluid to lubricate cavities
Cutaneous membrane
Epidermis (epithelial tissue) over the dermis (dense irregular connective tissue). Upper epithelial layers are heavily keratinized. Is that external covering of the body
Synovial membrane
Only non-epithelial membrane type. Inside lining of articular joint capsules. Random dispersal of cells with layers of areolar and dispose of connective tissue deep to the cells. Secrete fluid to lubricate the joints.
what is Interstitial growth
Growth from the center out. In the case of cartilage, chondroblasts divide and secrete additional ground substance (chondroitin sulfate). Growth appears to be from the inside out. Happens mostly in immature cartilage.
what is appositional growth
Growth at the perimeter. Mesenchymal cells in the deep part of the perichondrium (against the cartilage itself) secrete chondroitin sulfate. Growth appears at the superficial surface of the cartilage
