Tissues and Organs Flashcards
Parts of the lateral surface
Tight junctions, adhesion junctions, desmosomes, gap junctions, cell adhesion molecules
Tight junctions
Always at the top near the apical surface, block the flow of fluids between cells
Adhesion junctions
Found in pairs, forms a belt, functions as tissue stabilising factor and additional transport barrier
Desmosome
Connect adjacent cells with filaments, provides mechanical strength and prevents tissue destruction
Gap junctions
Pores that connect adjacent cells and allow communication via exchange of ions that can carry electric current
Parts of basal surface
He i-desmosome, focal adhesions, integrins, proteoglycans
Hemi-desmosome
Anchors epithelial cells to basal lamina and prevents loss of external surface
Focal adhesions
Attachment to basal lamina,
Integrins
Hold tissues together
Proteoglycans
Support hydration of extracellular matrix
Urothelium
Transitional epithelium, protects bladder from damage by acidic urine
Mucosa of GI tract
absorbs substances from lumen, prevents ingress of pathogens, moves contents and expel waste
