Cartilage Flashcards
Where is hyaline cartilage found?
- Articulate cartilage (joints)
- Costal cartilages (connect ribs to sternum)
- Respiratory cartilages (larynx, trachea, brohi)
- Nasal cartilage
Extracellulr matrix in hyaline cartilage
Firm, high water content
What is the perichondrium in cartilage?
Dense connective tissue covering the margin of hyaline cartilage. Contains elongated fibroblast-like cells
Elastic cartilage
Only have chondrocytes, also contains elastic fibres
Where is fibrocartilage found?
- intervertebral discs
- pubic symphysis
- menisci of knee joints
Finrocartilage structure
Combination of dense regular connective tissue and hyaline cartilage. Contains chondrocytes and fibroblasts
Fibrocartilage function
It acts as a shock absorber, resists stretching forces
Elastic cartilage function
Present where flexibility and support are needed
Features of cartilage
- primarily chondrocytes found in lacunae
- no blood vessels
- no nerves
- mainly water
Matrix of hyaline cartilage
contains type II collagen
Elastic cartilage matrix
Contains many elastic fibres and type II collagen in elastic lamellae
Fibrocartilage matrix
Contains mainly type I and some type II collagen fibres, no perichondrium, densest and most resilient
