Medical Imaging Flashcards
Colour of each type of material in x-rays
Black - air
Dark grey - fat
grey - soft tissue
light grey - bone
white - metal
Contrast media in x-rays
Used to improve contrast resolution in tissues, have high atomic number
Idiosyncratic contrast reactions
Allergic type reactions to drug used
Non-idiosyncratic contrast reactions
“metallic” taste or sensation of warmth, nausea
Advantages of x-rays
- Quick
- Simple
- Cheap
Disadvantages of x-rays
- Low dose of radiation
- 2D
- Contrast reactions
How does fluoroscopy work?
Continuous x-rays are used, creating real-time image
Uses of fluoroscopy
Diagnostic and interventional uses (vascular, GI, MSK)
Disadvantages of fluoroscopy
- Multiple x-rays = higher radiation dose
- 2D
- Contrast reactions
CT scans
Uses x-rays on one side of the rotating ring, detectors on the other side
Hounsfield unit numbers
Air = -1000HU
Fat, water, blood, soft tissue = 0HU
Cortical bone = 1000HU
Metal = 2000HU
Clinical uses of CT
- infection
- cancer
- obstruction
- haemorrhage
Advantages of CT
- fairly quick
- can scan most body parts well
Disadvantages of CT
- Radiation
- requires breath-holding
- contrast reactions
Advantages of ultrasound
- no radiation
- low cost
- can see movement
