Tissues Flashcards
What are the 4 tissue types?
epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous
What is the function of epithelial tissue?
Covers organs and lines body surfaces
What is the function of connective tissue?
bind, support and protect, stores fat, produces blood cells
What is the function of muscular tissue?
contract and shorten to cause movement
What is the function of nervous tissue?
transmit impulses to control and regulate the body
What does simple tissue look like?
one layer of cells
What does stratified tissue look like?
cells arranged in two or more layers
What does cuboidal tissue look like?
square
What does squamos tissue look like?
squished
What does columner tissue look like?
elongated
What is extracellular matrix?
protein fibers and a ground substance of nonfibrous proteins, other molecules and fluid
What are fibroblasts?
Large, star shaped cells that produce fibers by secreting proteins into the extracellular matrix of connective tissue
What are macrophages (Or histiocytes)?
clear, foreign particles from tissues
What are 3 types of connective tissues?
collagenous, elastic and reticular
What are 3 types of loose connective tissue?
aerolar, adipose and reticular
What is cartilage?
rigid connective tissue
What are the 3 layers of skin from outer to inner?
Epidermis, Dermis, subcutaneous
What does keratinized mean?
cells cytoplasm is replaced with keratin protein and becomes hardened and waterproof
What are melanocytes?
cells in the epidermis that produce melanin
What is the main functions of skin?
temp. regulation, protects underlying tissue, retardation of water loss, housing sensory receptors
What are 5 accessory organs of skin?
hair follicles Arrector pili muscle Sebaceous glands Nails Sweat glands
What is carcinoma?
Carcinoma is a type of cancer that develops from epithelial cells.[1] Specifically, a carcinoma is a cancer that begins in a tissue that lines the inner or outer surfaces of the body
What is melanoma?
a type of cancer that develops from the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes
What is in the epidermis? What type of tissue?
stratified squamos
What is the stratum basale?
the layer of dividing cells deep in the epidermis
What is in the dermis? What kind of tissue?
Connective
What is in the subcutaneous layer? What kind of tissue? What does it do?
Loos connective and adipose tissue
contains blood vessels
Binds skin to underlying organs
