Blood (Chapter 12) Flashcards
What are the functions of erythrocytes?
Transports oxygen
What is the function of leukocytes?
Helps maintain the body’s immune system
What is the function of plasma?
Contains proteins that help blood to clot, transport substances through the blood
What is the function of platelets?
Prevents bleeding
What are the proteins in plasma?
Albumins, globulins and fibrinogen
What Is the function of albumins?
Helps maintain osmotic pressure
What Is the function of globulins?
Transport lipids and vitamins
What Is the function of fibrinogen?
Blood clotting and coagulation
What are characteristics of red blood cells?
- biconcave disk
- discard nuclei
- can’t reproduce
Where are red blood cells produced?
In red bone marrow
Where are old blood cells disposed?
Liver and spleen
What are the 5 types of white blood cells?
Neutrophils, eosinophils, basophils, monocytes and lymphocytes
What is the most and least common type of white blood cells?
Neutrophils- most
Basophils- least
What is the function of neutrophils?
eat small particles and bacteria
What is the function of eosinophils?
Kills parasites and remove chemicals
What is the function of basophils?
Release histamine to increase blood flow
What is the function of monocytes?
eat large particles
What is the function of lymphocytes?
Provides immunity
What is hemostasis?
The stoppage of bleeding
What order does blood coagulation, blood vessel spasm and platelet plug occur during hemostasis?
Blood vessel spasm
Platelet plug formation
Blood coagulation
What is a thrombosis?
A clot that forms abnormally in a vessel
What are antigens?
Protein molecules on the surface of a cell membrane
What are antibodies?
Proteins that circulate in the plasma
What is agglutination?
Clumping of red blood cells after a bad Transfusion caused by antigens binding with antibodies from transfused blood
What antigens and antibodies does type A type B type ABand type O have? What blood types can the receive from?
Type A- A antigens and anti-B antibodies
*receive from A or O
Type B- B antigens and anti A antibodies
* receive from B or O
Type O- neither A or B antigens but both A and B antibodies
* receive from O
Type AB- A and B antigens and no antibodies
*receive from A,B,AB or O
How are blood types negative?
Th antigen isn’t present
Who is the universal recipient and the universal donor?
Recipient- AB
donor- O
What are the functions of blood?
Delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells, transports waste from cells and maintains homeostatis
What are thrombocytes?
Platelets
How long do erythrocytes live for?
120 days
