Leg Muscles (Muscular System) Flashcards
How many Quadricep muscles are there?
4
Where is the Vastus Intermedius? What is its function?
Upper portion of the femur
(goes under patella)
Action=Extends the knee
Where is the Vastus Medialis? What is its function?
Side of femur, inner thigh
(goes around the medial side
of the patella)
Action=Extends the knee
Where is the Vastus Lateralis? What is its function?
Outside part of femur, outer thigh
(goes on lateral side
of patella)
Action=Extends the knee
Where is the Rectus Femoris? What is its function?
Upper femur, covers vastus intermedius
Action= Extends the knee and flexes the hip
This one crosses 2 joints!
Where is the Sartorius ? What is its function?
Thin, long muscle in lateral side of hip that wraps around to the medial side of the knee
Action=Flexes and rotates the hip laterally
Flexes knee
What are the four Quad Muscles?
Vastus medialis, lateralis and intermedius and the rectus femoris
Where is the Semimembranosus? What is its function?
Back and medial side of femur
Action= Extends the thigh, flexes the knee
Where is the Semitendinosus? What is its function?
Back of the thigh between the bicep femoris and the semimembranosus
Action= Extends the thigh and flexes the knee
Where is the Bicep Femoris ? What is its function?
Back of the thigh, extends from the ischium( lower and back part of hip bone) to the femur
Action=Flexes the knee and long head also extends the hip joint
Where are the quad muscles?
Anterior side of the femoral region
Where are the hamstring muscles?
on the posterior, femoral region
How many hamstring muscles are there?
3
Where is the Glueteus medias? What is its function?
Outer surface of the pelvis
Action -Abducts and medially rotates the hip joint
Where is the Gluteus Maximus? What is its function?
The buttocks
Action-extensor of hip joint and abduction
Where is the tibilias anterior ? What is its function?
Narrow muscle above the ankle, on the tibia( shin area)
Action: Dorsiflexor of ankle
Where is the Fibularis Longus( Peroneus Longus)? What is its function?
Lateral edge of leg, extends to lateral metatarsals
Action: Everts foot and plantar flexes ankle
Where is the Soleus? What is its function?
Back part of the lower leg, below the Gastrocnemius
Action: plantar flexor of ankle
Where is the Gastrocnemius? What is its function?
Back of leg, calf muscle, ABOVE soleous
Action: flexes knee and plantar flexor of ankle
