Tissues Flashcards
Name the 4 types of tissue
Epithelial, connective, muscle, nervous
What are functions of tissues?
Structure (structural support)
Protection (e.g. skull protects the brain)
Transport (substances in the blood)
Insulate (adipose tissue contains fatty deposits to prevent heat loss)
Explain simple epithelia
single layer of cells for absorption and diffusion
Give examples and simple epithelia
Squamous (found in lungs)
Cuboidal (found in kidneys and sweat ducts)
Columnar (found in respitory tract)
Explain compound epithelia
Multiple layers of cells providing protections
Give examples of compound epithelia
Stratified (found in the mouth, oesophagus and skin)
Function of blood
transports oxygen, nutrients and waste, defends against infection
Function of cartilage
Flexible support in joints, nose and ears
Function of bone
Provides rigid support and protects vital organs
Function of areolar
Binds structures and allows flexibility
Function of adipose tissue
stores fat, insulates and cushions organs
Function of muscle tissue
enables movement by contracting and relaxing
Explain striated (skeletal) muscle
voluntary control, attached to bones for movement
Explain non-striated (smooth) muscle tissue
involuntary control, found in hollow organs like the stomach and bladder
Explain cardiac muscle
Found only in the heart, myogenic and highly specialised for rhythmic contraction
