Tissues Flashcards
A group or layer of similarly specialized cells that join together to perform certain specific functions.
Tissue
The microscopic study of the structure, composition, and function of tissues.
Histology
hist = tissue
ology= study of
A non-physician specialist who studies the microscope structure of tissues.
Histologist
The four main types of tissues:
> Epithelial tissue
> Connective tissue
> Muscle tissue
> Nerve tissue
This forms a protective covering for all of the internal and external surfaces of the body. These tissues also form glands.
Epithelial tissue
Is the specialized epithelial tissue that forms the epidermis of the skin and the surface layer of mucous membranes.
Epithelium
This is the specialized epithelial tissue that lines the blood and lymph vessels, body cavities, glands, and organs.
Endothelium
This supports and connects organs and other body tissues.
Connective tissues
bone and cartilage, form the joints and framework if the body.
Dense connective tissues
Also known as “fat”, provides protective padding, insulation, and support.
Adipose tissue
Adip = fat
ose = pertaining to
Surrounds various organs and supports both nerve cells and blood cells.
Loose connective tissue
Which are the blood and lymph, transports nutrients and waste products throughout the body.
Liquid connective tissues
Contains cells with the specialized ability to contract and relax.
Muscle tissue
Contains cells with the specialized ability to react to stimuli and to conduct electrical impulses.
Nerve tissues
The defective development, or the congenital absence, of an organ or tissue.
Aplasia
a- = without
-plasia = formation
