Genetics Flashcards
Is a fundamental physical and functional unit of heredity.
This controls hereditary disorders and all physical traits such as hair, skin, eye color.
Gene
Is the study of how genes are transferred from parents to their children and the role of genes in health and disease.
Genetics
gene = producing
-tics = pertaining to
Is inherited from either parent, the offspring “will” inherit that genetic condition or characteristic.
Dominant gene
Is inherited from both parents, the offspring “will” inherit that genetic condition or characteristics.
Recessive gene
Is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders that are transmitted by a recessive gene. When this gene is transmitted by both parents, the child will have this condition.
Sickle cell anemia
This is the complete set of genetic information of an organism.
(it’s like finding having so many twins / clones from around the world)
Genome
This is a genetic structure located within the nucleus of each cell.
Chromosome
Is any cell in the body “except” the gametes (sex cells)
Somatic cell
This is pertaining to the body in general
Somatic
Also known as a “sex cell”, it is the only type of cell that does not contain 46 chromosomes. Instead, each ovum (egg) or sperm has 23 single chromosomes.
Gametes (sperm or egg)
A specialist in the genes department is know as
Geneticist
