Tissue; The living fabric Flashcards
Briefly describe epithelial tissue and what its purpose is
Sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity and form boundaries between different environments
What 2 forms of epithelial tissue occur in the body and briefly describe each
- Covering and lining epithelium; forms the outer layer of skin , lines the digestive and respiratory systems
- Glandular epithelium; fashions the glands of the body.
Name and describe the 2 classifications of epithelial tissue
- Simple epithelia; consist of a single cell layer
2. Stratified epithelia; composed of 2 or more cell layers stacked on top of eachother
Give the 4 classes of connective tissue
- Connective tissue proper
- Cartilage
- Bone
- Blood
Name and briefly describe the 3 main components of connective tissue
- Ground substance (unstructured material that fills space between the cells)
- Tissue fibers (proteins that provide support)
- Tissue cells (each connective tissue class has a resident cell type that exists in immature (-blast) and mature forms (-cyte))
What are the 2 sub-classes of connective tissue proper
- Loose connective tissue
2. Dense connective tissue
Briefly describe the 3 types of loose connective tissue
- Areolar = serves as a universal packing material between other tissues
- Adipose = fat tissue
- Reticular = resembles areolar connective tissue, but the only fibers in its matrix are reticualr fibers
Briefly describe the 3 types of dense connective tissue
- Dense regular = contains closely packed bundles of collagen fibers running parallel to the direction of pull
- Dense irregular = same as dense regular, but they are arranged irregularly
- Elastic = found in elastic ligaments (those connecting the adjacent vertebrae
Name the 3 kinds of muscle tissue
- Skeletal muscle
- Cardiac muscle (found only in the walls of the heart)
- Smooth muscle (named so because the cells have no visible striations)
