Lower limb Flashcards
Between which 2 points does the short ligament of the femur run from and to, and what is its role
Runs from the head of the femur to the acetabulum, to help secure the femur
What does a broken hip normally refer to?
When the neck of the femur is fractured. The neck is the weakest part of the femur and is often fractured
Describe the femur between the shaft and neck
At the junction of the shaft and neck of the femur are the lateral greater trochanter and posteromedial lesser trochanter
Describe the structure of the distal end of the femur
Distally, the femur broadens and ends in the lateral and medial condyles, which articulate with the tibia
Where can you find the medial and lateral epicondyles?
The medial and lateral epicondyles flank the condyles superiorly
What connects the tibia and fibula?
These 2 bones are connected by an interosseous membrane
Describe the structure of the tibia at the proximal end
At the proximal end are the concave medial and lateral condyles. These are separated by the intercondylar eminence. Just inferior to the condyles is the tibial tuberosity, to which the patellar ligament attaches.
Describe the structure of the tibia at the distal end
Distally, the tibia is flat where it articulates with the talus bone. Medial to the joint surface is the medial malleolus.
What role does the fibula play in the knee and ankle joint
The fibula does not contribute to the knee joint and merely helps to stabilize the ankle joint
Where is the distal and proximal end of the fibula?
Its proxiaml end is its head and the distal end is the lateral malleolus.
