Tissue response to infection Flashcards
How do you identify regenerative left shift?
Mature neutrophils outnumber band neutrophils
How do you identify degenerative left shift?
More band than mature neutrophils
What is prognosis of degenerative left shift like compared to regenerative?
Poorer
What is lymphadenitis?
Acute inflammation of lymph node
What does lymphadenitis look like at PM?
Congestion, oedema, pus, necrosis
What do reactive lymph nodes look like under microscope?
Germinal centres, lymphocyte proliferation, bulging cortex
What is lymphangitis?
Inflammation of lymphatics
What is a common cause of lymphangitis?
Cat scratches
Where do you see Langhans Giant Cells?
In granulomas
What do lymph nodes look like in Johne’s?
Enlarged, oedematous mesenteric lymph nodes
What does reactive lymphoid hyperplasia look like under microscope?
Cells proliferate in cortex, multiplication of cells in thymus-dependent area (paracortex), new plasma cells accumulate in medullary cords
What is a total node response?
Lymphadenitis and reactice lymphoid hyperplasia
Which two places can lymphoid hypoplasia be?
In the lymph nodes (empty follicles) or the thymus (from stress in the young animal)
Which conditions can cause lymphoid hypoplasia?
Congenital or acquired immuno-deficiency, immuno-deficiency virus, distemper or parvo, cytotoxic drugs, radiation
What is dermatopathic lymphadenopathy?
Skin lesions can lead to melanin release which is phagocytosed by macrophages
