What are the two types of ticks?
Soft (Argasidae - bird ticks) or hard (Ixodidae)
What body features do hard ticks have?
Scutum, prominent mouth parts, ornate decoration, festoons, eyes
How many sets of legs do nymphs and adult have?
Four
How many sets of legs do larvae have?
Three
How many hosts can hard ticks have?
One, two or three
How many hosts do the UK hard ticks have?
Three
What happens to larvae when temperature and moisture are correct?
Quest low down the grass using palps (sensory organs) and grab onto mice
Where do the nymphs quest?
Higher up the grass to grab larger animals
How does number of deer affect human Lyme disease?
Increases (even though deer aren’t reservoir)
Where is the Lyme disease reservoir?
Wood mice
What are the two mechanisms of disease transmission in ticks?
Trans-stadial or trans-ovarial
What is the method of transmission of Lyme disease between ticks?
Trans-stadial
