13
Q

Why do you need to know if the louse is chewing or sucking?

16
Q

What colour do sucking lice go when fed?

A

Blue (usually brown)

17
Q

What are some clinical signs of lice?

A

Immediate and delayed hypersensitivity, pruritis, licking, sucking, biting, alopecia, wool damage, tags of wool, secondary infections, exfoliative dermatitis, anaemia

18
Q

Which type of cattle mainly get mixed lice infections?

A

Housed cattle in winter

19
Q

What degree of production loss can lice infections in housed cattle cause?

A

10%

20
Q

Why did lice infection in sheep used to be rare?

A

Because of sheep scab dipping

21
Q

After introducing infected sheep, how long until clinical signs occur?

A

Tags and rash by 6 weeks

22
Q

After introducing infected sheep, how long until all are infected?

A

6 months

23
Q

How do you tell the difference between sheep scab and lice in sheep?

A

Scab is rapid whereas lice is slow, lice has poor BCS and sheep scab is good, in scab they are pruritic with scabs and wool pulled out whereas with lice the skin is irritated, damaged and scaly.

24
Q

What are the only type of lice pigs get?

A

Sucking

25
Q

What can happen in debilitated animals?

A

Large numbers can build up and there may be marked hypersensitivity

26
Q

What kind of lice do birds get?

A

Chewing
