a sensation of a sound when there is no auditory stimulus

how does it happen?
A
can occur without hearing loss and results from heightened awareness of neural activity in the auditory pathways
vascular malformation - aneurysms or vascular tumours can be associated - when this is the case the tinnitus is pulsatile and most commonly unilateral

how does it present?
A
hissing or ringing in the ears - can be distressing

how is it managed?
A
difficult to manage
tinnitus masker - mechanically produced continuous soft sound can help
cognitive behavioural therapy through audiological services are of use and rehabilitate patients well
