a functional disorder - not true dysphagia

how does it present?

A

intermittent sensation of a lump in the throat
a midline lump at the level of the cricoid cartilage
worse when swallowing saliva
goes away when eating and drinking
clear ENT exam and normal laryngeal mobility is felt when gently rocking the larynx across the post cricoid tissues

how is it managed?

A

contrast swallow - shows the structures below the pharynx and assesses swallowing dynamically
explanation and reassurance
antidepressants
any suspicious area needs endoscopy with biopsy
