white american and British women, 18-40, married with children, staying at home and who aspire to be able to have the perfect lifestyle - difficulty telling age as of images being illustrated, as of being timeless - targeted at white women - immigration only just started to happen within the 1950’s - mentions America within the advert - also appeal to any post-war allied countries
What would the beautifully illustrated women do?
beautifully illustrated - appeal to women that are aspiring to have a better life - evident by the full face of makeup - repeating the word “women” within the advert - use of the word “you” - direct adress- female specific words to target the audience
what is the inter-textual reference within this?
reference to Rosie the Riveter - helps to engage the post-war audiences - engages audiences as audiences from the 1940’s may have remembered the advert - brings in familiar audiences
what can be said about the women’s outfit?
costume and her hairstyles - the curls in her hair and the headscarf - popular and fashionable with the audiences within the time
what does the cartoon strip suggest?
clothes hanging on the cartoon strip - indicates that the target audience is further going to be women who are married with children - hanging men and children’s clothes on the washing line

1950’s there was this sudden boom for consumerism - rationing had ended - people had started to receive more disposable income - buying new tech they have never had before - featuring new and fashionable technologies - engaging audiences that want to be trendy - mainstream audiences

“guaranteed by good housekeeping” - good housekeeping is a magazine - endorsement by popular brands - appealed to audiences that want reliability and good quality
How might some of the women have reacted towards the advert?
some of the women that may have certain feminist ideas - may have reacted as an oppositional reading towards the advert - felt that the advert was sexist - read product in different ways according to gender,age,class etc

Gerbner and the theory of “cultivation” - women might have been exposed to lot’s of adverts like this within the 1950’s - effects of representations within this advert may have “cultivated” over time - repeated use of media language throughout the advert might have been designed too “cultivate” the audience about Tide - repetition of being the cleanest wash and it is what women wants - effect of the advert may have also been “cultivated” over time if a audience has seen lot’s of Tide adverts - audiences may have been entertained by the advert by the bold images ans the cartoon strip and the fun wording

middle class - there is the quality of the advert that has been emphasised on the product and not the price - good income for the women not having to work - extra technology to be able to put this product into use
