Tibiofibular joints- Palastanga Flashcards
What type of movement occurs between the tibia and fibula
Passive which is mechanically related to movement of the ankle
No active movement
What type of joint is the superior/proximal TF joint
Synovial plane
What type of joint is the inferior/distal TF joint
Fibrous (syndesmosis)
What are the articular surfaces of the superior TF joint
The head of the fibula and an oval facet on the posterolateral undersurface of the lateral tibial condyle
Name the supporting structures of the superior TF joint
Fibrous capsule which is supported anteriorly and posteriorly by:
- anterior ligament of the head of the fibula
- posterior ligament of the head of the fibula
When might the superior TF joint move
(Very minimal) Gliding movements may occur during movement of the ankle and due to pull of muscles attached to the fibula
What are the articular surfaces of the inferior TF joint
Convex lower and of the fibula, above the its ankle articular facet and the fibular notch on the lateral side of the tibia
What unites the bones at the inferior TF joint
Strong interosseous ligament (continuous with the interosseous membrane superiorly)
Anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments
Transverse tibiofibular ligament
Describe the anterior and posterior tibiofibular ligaments
Long superficial bands stretching from the borders of the fibular notch of the tibia to the anterior and posterior surfaces of the lateral malleolus of the fibula
Posterior is thicker and broader
Describe the transverse tibiofibular ligament
Hides under the posterior tibiofibular ligament
Attaches the whole length of the inferior border of the post tibia and upper part malleolar fossa of fibula
In doing so forms part of the articulation of the trochlea
Articular feature of the inferior tibiofibular joint
Extension of a synovial lined recess from the the ankle joint extends upwards between the 2 bones and is blocked superiorly by the interosseous membrane
What is the term for when the fibula separates from the tibia at the ankle joint, almost always with assoc ligamentous disruption
Diastasis of the ankle joint
The interosseous membrane can be regarded as what type of joint
A fibrous syndesmosis
What direction are the fibres of the interosseous membrane and why is this significant
Pass laterally and downwards from the tib to the fib and prevent inferior sliding of the fibula due to muscle pull
What occurs with the fibula during dorsiflexion of the ankle
It is separated from the tibia due to the broad trochlear part of the talus being forced into the narrower malleolar mortise
