Grip Types Flashcards
What are the 2 types of classifications of grip
Precision and power
What briefly is precision grip
When the object is small and/ or fragile
It is gripped between the pads of the digits which conform to its shape
What muscles are involved in precision grip
Small muscles of the hand
Flexors digitorum profundus and superficialis and pollicis longus
Some types of precision grip
Terminal opposition (pincer)
Subterminal opposition
Subtermino-lateral opposition
Describe terminal opposition grip
Finest and most precise of all grips
Pads of digits or even nails used to pick uo up fine objects such as a pin
Describe subterminal opposition grip
Palmar surfaces of the thumb, index finger and possibly other fingers come into contact with eachother
Most common example is tripod grip
Another example is pinch grip as in holding a clothes peg (palmar surafces compared to pincer grip)
Describe subterminolateral opposition grip
The pad of the thumb presses against the side of the index finger
e.g. to hold a key
Is less fine but strong
Briefly what is power grip
Where considerable force may be required
The hand is used in addition to the fingers
The wrist flexors and extensors work strongly to fix the hands position while the long flexors and intrinsic hand muscles work to grip the object
Types of power grip
Oblique palmar
Ball grip
Cylinder
Hook
Describe oblique palmar grip
The most powerful grip
Whole hand and fingers wrap around the object whose long axis lies obliquely across the palm
Thumb acts as a buttress
e.g. using a screwdriver
Describe the ball grip
Ball shaped object is enclosed by fingers thumb and palm
Fingers and thumb are increasingly abducted as diameter increases
If the object is flat as with a jar lid the palm may not make contact - span grip
Describe the cylinder grip
Object is held transversely across the palm fingers and thumb
Describe the hook grip
Object (such as suit case handle) is held across the palmar surface of the flexed fingers
Thumb plays no part, only secure in one direction, towards the fingers
Should the weight increase grip will change to palmar grip
What factors determine grip strength
Size of the object, weight of the object, shape of the object, functioning of muscles
