Thyroid System Flashcards
Thyroid Gland
Produces a mixture of T3 and T4 (thyroxine) that control metabolic rate (MR)
T3
Active form of thyroxine
T4
A pro-hormone and is given for thyroid hormone replacement and is the inactive form
How do hormone levels and MR change in response to winter vs summer?
Increase in winter and decrease in the summer (also decrease with starvation and dieting)
Dietary Iodide
T3 and T4 require this for synthesis
How long can Ts last without Iodide?
The iodide stored in the gland help them to last up to two months without it
Goiter
Caused by no Ts and no negative feedback, causes hi TSH which stimulates gland growth
Tumors
Tumors that overproduce a hormone can occur at any stage, tumors don’t respond to negative feedback
Hyperthyroidism
Most common form is Grave’s Disease, autoimmune, except antibodies stimulate gland to grow and secrete Ts
Exopthalmus
Hyperthyroidism, gland is often 2-3 times the normal size and eyes can protrude
Signs of Hyperthyroidism or Grave’s Disease
Weight loss, heat intolerance, muscle weakness, nervousness, can’t sleep, fatigued
Hypothyroidism
Most common form is Hashimoto’s Disease, autoimmune attack on the gland
Signs of Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s Disease
Fatigue, sluggishness, husky voice, puffy appearance, weight gain
Cretinism
Retardation because nervous system doesn’t develop right without Ts
What can cause Cretinism?
Congenital hypothyroidism and failure of gland to develop or faulty enzyme in T synthesis pathway
