Gas Exchange Flashcards
Fish and Inverts
Have gills
Insects
Have a tracheal system
Most animals
Have lungs
Birds
Have a lung/airsac system, most efficient system
Lungs
Functional unit of the lungs is the alveolus
Alveolus
300 mill/lung in clusters like grapes, outer surface of alveoli is densely vascularized
Elasticity and surface tension
The elasticity of alveoli and the surface tension of H20 film cause the lungs to tend to collapse
Surfactant
Decreases the work of breathing, it is secreted into fluid lining inner surface of alveoli, it lowers the surface tension
Rate of inflation of lungs with surfactant
1 millimeter of Mercury
Rate of inflation of lungs without surfactant
25 millimeters of Mercury
Max expiratory effort
100 millimeters of Mercury
Max inspiratory effort
80 millimeters of Mercury
Diaphragm
Quiet breathing is achieved by movements of this, when you inhale the diaphragm moves down and then you exhale via passive recoil
Heavy breathing
Rib muscles raise and lower rib cage
Forced exhale
adds abdominal muscular contraction
