Hemoglobin Flashcards
Hemoglobin
Enables our blood to carry ~60-70 times more O2, has 200 times more affinity for CO than O2
RBC
Contains approximately 300mill molecules of hemoglobin
HbS
Sickle Cell anemia, has one amino acid different from a normal adult (HbA)
Vertical Hemoglobin
Has 4 subunits, each with a heme group, heme part contains fe++ which binds one oxygen
HbS Symptoms
Causes Hb to polymerize and crystalize producing RBC rigidity and obstruction of capillaries, usually during low oxygen
Bohr Effect
Hemoglobin loads more O2 in lungs where pH is high and unloads more in tissue where pH is low
Normal Arterial pH
7.4
pH changes
Strongly affect binding of O2 to hemoglobin
Basic pH
More oxygen
Acidic pH
Less oxygen, during exercise
Exercise pH levels
During exercise pH can fall to 6.9 in muscle capillaries, this increases O2 unloading by Bohr Effect
HbF
Fetal hemoglobin, has higher affinity for O2 than HbA in order to extract O2 from mom, switched to HbA at birth
Sickle-Cell Anemia
