Thyroid issues Flashcards
Whats the major thyroid hormone in the blood?
T4 (higher than T3)
what regulates hormonal output for the thyroid?
Anterior pituitary, where TSH is produced, which is regulated by TRH, produced in the hypothalamus.
Relationship to cholesterol with hypothyroidism vs hyperthyroidism
Hypothyroidism: Increases cholesterol and LDL
Hyper: Decreases cholesterol and LDL
what test detects if thyroid disorder is autoimmune?
TPO test
Sequence for thyroid hormone production
TRH/TRF - TSH - T3 - T4
What is the role of PTH
When low serum calcium (calcium in blood) - PTH turns on and brings more calcium into blood. When it is normal, PTH turns off.
In the thyroid, the T4 is stored and bound to what?
thyroglobin
thyroxine-binding globulin is a carrier protein that carries T4 in the blood
correct sequence for producing thyroid hormones:
Hypothalamus> Pituitary> Thyroid
In helping to regulate calcium the parathyroid hormone (PTH) helps activate which vitamin?
Vitamin D
T3 and T4 are synthesized from what?
Tyresone and Iodine
Thyroiditis
Inflammation of the thyroid
It initially causes a leak of hormones that results in symptoms of an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Over time, the inflammation impairs thyroid hormone production resulting in underactivity (hypothyroidism).
There may be no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they may vary depending on the stage of the inflammation.
Treatment is focused on the underlying cause as well as regulating thyroid function.
Graves disease
From hyperthyroidism: thyroid storm: Yin deficiency
Main Sx: Exophthalmos (eyes bulging out)
Autoimmune condition Hashimoto’s thyroiditis causes and severe form
Hypothyroidism, Myxedema - can make skin appear swollen and puffy.
yang deficiency
