Medical Testing Flashcards

1
Q

Computed tomography (CT) is

A

a diagnostic imaging test used to create detailed images of internal organs, bones, soft tissue and blood vessels. … CT is fast, painless, noninvasive and accurate.

detect bone and joint problems, like complex bone fractures and tumors. If you have a condition like cancer, heart disease, emphysema, or liver masses, CT scans can spot it or help doctors see any changes. They show internal injuries and bleeding, such as those caused by a car accident.

Disadvantage - high radioactivity

Q

PET scan

A

A positron emission tomography (PET) scan is an imaging test that allows your doctor to check for diseases in your body. The scan uses a special dye containing radioactive tracers. These tracers are either swallowed, inhaled, or injected into a vein

PET scan can find abnormal activity

detect early signs of cancer, heart disease and brain disorders. Checks whole body for metastasis of cancer

inspect your blood flow, your oxygen intake, or the metabolism of your organs and tissues. PET scans show problems at the cellular level, giving your doctor the best view of complex systemic diseases.

CT scan

A

Tumors, blood clots, biliary obstruction, aneurysms

  • Great for post trauma injuries such as MVA
  • Better for acute sx (chest, abdominal, lung)
  • best at identifying cancer such as lymphoma
  • very good for diagnosis spinal problems, injuries to hands, feet, blood vessels, muscles. , blood clots, internal bleeding, tumors
