Q

What is the difference between exocrine and endocrine glands and what type are the pitutary, thyroid, sex glands, and adrenal glands

A

Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into the blood stream, exocrine glands secrete through ducts

The pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, and sex glands are endocrine glands.

Q

The Hypothalamus Secretes TRH. What is TRH and what does it do

Q

T3 and T4 are regulated by what system and what do they do

A

T3 & T4 are reglated by a negative feed back system so when they get too high production stops and when its too low it starts.

T3 and T4-

  • Control cellular metabolism
  • Influence cell replication
  • Important in Brain and normal growth

Q

Calcitonin does what

A

It is secreted when calcium levels in the blood Serum increase.

It reduces Serum Calcium levels by stimulating calcium absorption by the bones.

Primary Responsibilty is CALCIUM REGULATION IN THE BODY

Q

Assessment of the thyroid includes

A

Inspection and Palpation of the gland for enlargement for tenderness nodules

Auscultation for the presence of a Bruit.

*Presence of a bruit is a bad symptom due to vascularity of the thyroid*

Q

What are some diagnostic tests for the thyroid?

A

The number one Diagnostic test for Thyroid is the levels of TSH.

Serum free T4 is done after to confirm abnormal TSH test

Tests for THYROID antibodies increase with autoimmune thyroid diseases

Iodine tracing with iodine uptake testing

FNA- sampling

Q

Due to thyroids use of iodine, what is important

A

Dietary Idodine is very imperative because our body does not produce iodine on its own. Many areas Western NY especially must eat supplemental Iodine. In most area’s Iodine is added to salts.

Q

What Is hypothyroidism

A

Increased TSH levels and Decreased T4 Levels

Women are 5x more likely to develop then men

17
Q

What are some of the causes of Hypothyroidism

A
  • Atrophy of the gland with aging, most common in elderly women
  • Hashimotos Disease- an autoimmune disorder
  • Post treatment for HYPERthyroidism
  • Medications
  • Iodine deficiency
18
Q

What are some subjective EARLY signs of hypoTHYROID

A
  • Extreme Fatigue
  • Numbness and tingling of fingers
  • Hair loss, brittle nails, dry skin
  • hoarsness
  • menstrual changes and loss of libido
19
Q

What is some Subjective LATE Warning

A
  • neurologic- dulled mentation, apathy, slowed speech, dementia
  • enlarged toungue, hands and feet
  • GI Consitpation weight gain
  • cardiac- CAD atherosclerosis, Slowed Pulses
