Thrombosis Flashcards
1
Q
What is a thrombus
How is it different to a clot
A
Thrombus
-platelet + fibrin clot in heart or vasculature
Clot
-platelet + fibrin + RBC in surrounding tissue
2
Q
What is an infarction
What are the 2 types
A
Ischemic necrosis via vascular occlusion via
- thrombus
- embolus
Septic/blood
-due to bacterial contamination
White/red
-due to arterial occlusion into solid tissue
3
Q
What are the 2 types of MI
What kind of occlusion are they associated with
A
Transmural, STEMI, no flow
Subendocardial, NSTEMI, partial flow
4
Q
What are the 5 main complications of MI and why
A
Arrhythmias-conduction :( HF-myocyte death Pericarditis-inflammation Rupture/aneurysm-weak fibrous scar tissue Mural thrombosis-stasis => TE
5
Q
What is an embolism
Name the 5 main types
A
Abnormal material impacting in the vessel, occluding flow
- thrombus/atheroma
- fat (from bone fractures)
- septic (bacteria containing blood clots)
- air
- tumour/cells
6
Q
How are DVTs linked to PEs
A
DVT embolism => PE
- infarction not extensive due to many pulmonary collaterals
- may lead to pleuritic pain on inspiration
