Thoracic wall, pectoral muscles, pleural cavity, and lungs in situ Flashcards
what is a tuberosity
A bony protrusion where a muscle attaches; is a rough, potentially slightly protruding surface
What is a tubercle
A rounded eminence, smaller than a tuberosity
What is a fossa
depression or hollow usually in bone
What is a fovea
A small pit, usually on head of a bone
What is a foramen or a foramina
Hole/opening
Where does phrenic nerve go
Through superior mediastinum, then through the medial part of the inferior mediastinum
What is the suprasternal notch
Jugular notch
what is the costovertebral joint
Joint between the rib and the vertebrae
Where is the seratus anterior
Comes around the rib anteriorly and it is finger like projections
What does the seratus anterior do
Responsible for keeping the scapula held against the thoracic wall. If its not there, the scapula comes out like a wing
Where do the main arteries veins and nerves of the intercostal space sit
Costal groove of the associated ribs
Where do the collateral ones (more minor than the main arteries veins and nerves) sit
Sit above the rib below
Where do the internal thoracic artery and vein sit
Sits on either side of the sternum
What do the thoracic arteries branch into
Anterior intercostal arteries
Where does the phrenic nerve pass through
Comes from neck (C3,4,5) Goes through superior mediastinum Middle part of inferior mediastinum Goes close to root of the lung Passes behind the heart Innervates the diaphragm
