Thoracic Outlet Syndrome Flashcards
What are the “tunnels” that the brachial plexus, subclavian artery, and subclavian vein travel through?
Between anterior and posterior scalenes (not vein)
Between clavicle and first rib
Under pec minor
Actions of the scalenes
Elevates ribs 1 and 2 of a patient in sternal breathing
Flexes head and neck
How is TOS symptoms typically aggravated?
Arm elevation or end range movements of the head and neck
What do patients with TOS typically complain of?
Vague, heavy, cold, weak, numbness, and tingling in the arm
What is the most classified source of TOS? What percentage?
Neurogenic (90%)
What can cause pressure on the brachial plexus as they exit the neck and travel to the arm?
Structural (an extra rib), muscular tightness, joint tightness/restriction, postural and motor control problems
How can the scalenes affect TOS?
Tightness or chest breathing can pull the first rib closer to the clavicle
How can pec minor affect TOS?
Tightness and put pressure on neurovascular tissue
Examples of how posture can cause narrowing tunnels
Scapular protraction/depression/anterior tipping
Thoracic kyphosis
Forward head, increased cervical lordosis
Individual TOS tests lack…
solid diagnostic accuracy
It is not uncommon for non-pathological non-symptomatic people to have…
postitive special test findings
