Cervical posture- body mechanics- ergonomics Flashcards
What are the functional loss characteristics?
Position Vertical (axial) loading Pressure Constrained posture/stasis Sustained muscle contraction
Define position as a functional loss characteristic
A consistent position reproduces complaint. Ex. forward head resulting OA extension
Define vertical (axial) loading as a functional loss characteristic
Sensitivity to weight bearing/vertical loading. Ex. agg: standing or sitting prolonged periods; Ease: lying down or reclined positions
Define pressure as a functional loss characteristic
Commonly seen as weight bearing or compression sensitivity of the symptomatic tissues. Ex. lying on a side increases shoulder symptoms
Define constrained posture/stasis as a functional loss characteristic
Symptoms typically worse if positioned in a posture too long. This position or posture doesnt have to be weight bearing
Define sustained muscle contraction as a functional loss characteristic
Patient uses the same muscle groups for sustained periods of time in a small range. Ex. working at a keyboard for several hours
When are functional loss characteristics typically identified?
During the subjective and objective exam
How are functional loss characteristics useful?
They can help guide patient education
What else can contribute to poor posture?
High cognitive demands, stress, eye strain, and fatigue
How can one treat posture associated with stress, cog demand, etc.
Posture instruction
Biofeedback: control of tension at rest, in action, and in work situations
Mindfulness/awareness
Relaxation training/stress reduction
