What should a PM do with Stakeholders throughout a project?

What is involved with Identify Stakeholders (I)?
The first identified stakeholders are most likely those who pinpoint a problem or need. May be involved in developing business documents for a project to provide a solution.
Identifying all stakeholders early helps to create a project that considers all the interests, influence, and interdependencies of stakeholders.
What are the inputs to Identify Stakeholders (I)?
Benefit Documents; PM Plan; Agreements; Project Charter; Project Documents - issue log, change log, requirements documentation
What tools and techniques of Identify Stakeholders (I)?
Questionnaires and Surveys; Brainstorming and Brain Writing; Stakeholder Analysis; Document Analysis; Stakeholder Mapping;
What is the difference between brainstorming and brain writing?
Brain writing is an individual effort, while brainstorming involves a group of people interacting and working together
Stakeholder Analysis
When identifying stakeholders, the PM will need to consider the stakeholder’s roles and responsibilities on the project, as well as their level of authority and influence within the org.
What are the types of interest (stakes) that a stakeholder may have in the project?
Ownership - May have to sell property for the new freeway;
Knowledge - May be the expert who designed the legacy inventory management system that is being replaced;
Rights - may be concerend that the new development will endanger the community;
Rights - Government official may be responsible for ensuring safety practices on construction site comply;
Interest - Community may be concerned that additional traffic will occur
Contribution - resource manager may be concerned the team members they are providing will not be able to do their normal work plus the project work
What is stakeholder mapping?
In addition to analyzing each stakeholder’s impact and influence, the PM will need to identify ways to manage them effectively. Groups stakeholders into categories to allow PM determine how to prioritize their efforts to engage stakeholders on the project
What are examples of stakeholder mapping?
Interest/Power Grid
Stakeholder cube - 3D model groups to represent aspects or dimensions of a stakeholder group;
Salience model - used to group stakeholders based on their need for attention, authority level, or level of involvement.
What are the outputs of Identify Stakeholders (I)?
Stakeholder register, change requests;
PM Plan updates - risk, communications
Project Documents Updates - assumption log, issue log, risk register

May include each stakeholder’s name, title, supervisor, project role, contact info, major requirements and expectations, assessment info, impact and influence, attitude about project, stakeholder classification,
What does plan stakeholder engagement involve?
Developing a stakeholder engagement plan and think head about how the project will impact stakeholders. Allows the PM to effectively manage relationships with large amounts of people. Involves planning how the PM and project team will interact with stakeholders, and involve them, and manage their expectations and how they will keep them satisfied to ensure stakeholders are an asset to the project.
The PM will need to determine which stakeholders will require the most time and effort. PM must think about the stakeholder roles, and their environment, and the specific needs of the project.
