What are the 5 PM process groups?
Initiating Process Group; Planning Process Group; Executing Process Group; Monitoring and Controlling Process Group; Closing Process Group.
What processes characterize the Initiating Process Group?
Processes performed to define a new project or new phase of an existing project by obtaining authorization to start the project or phase.
What are some activities included in the (I) process group?
Develop project charter or project brief;
Identify Stakeholders;
Obtain approval to begin planning
What does the (P) process group include?
Processes required to PLAN the project:
Define scope;
create WBS;
Develop schedule;
Determine project budget;
Plan how to manage quality, resources, communications, risk, procurements;
Results in PM Plan that governs the execution of the project.
What does the (E) process group include?
Processes performed to complete the work as defined in the PM plan to satisfy project specifications including:
Managing the team;
Performing the work;
Gathering and distributing information and knowledge;
managing stakeholder expectations.
What does the (M&C) process group include?
Processes that look at what is actually happening on the project and compares it to what was planned:
Identify corrective and preventive actions;
Managing changes;
Controlling scope, schedule, cost, quality, risks, etc;
Administering procurements.
What does the (C) process group involve?
Involves tying up any loose ends and ensuring that the project is entirly complete (or if terminated early, document why):
Should include lessons learned report that details what went well, what didn’t, and what would you do differently next time
What is difference between project life cycle and PM Processes
PM Processes are ALWAYS the SAME. Project life cycles can vary depending on type and complexity of project. for example:
A Project life cycle: Research-design-code-test-transition
Where as each of above phases involved the I,P,E,M&C,C processes
What are Knowledge Areas?
PMI Utilizes 10 PM Knowledge Areas;
A Knowledge area represents a complete set of concepts, terms, and activities that make up a professional field, PM field, or area of specialization;
All 10 knowledge areas must be considered during the project
