Q

What occurs in the stationary phase?

A

Commonly a thin metal sheet coated iin alumina or silica. The solute is adsorbed onto this surface and dependant upon the strength of the attraction the samples will travel varying distances.

Q

What occurs during the mobile phase?

A

Either a polar or non polar liquid will flow over the surface of the adsorbed solute. Allowing the solute to travel up the sheet.
