Gas Chromatogrphy Flashcards
What can GLC be used to analyse?
Gases, Volatile liquids and solids in their vapour form.
What components make up the stationary phase?
Long coiled column. Contains a non-volaitle liquid.
What happens in the mobile phase?
An inert gas moves the sample molecule through the stationary phase.
What is the retention time?
The time taken for the compound being analaysed to pass through the coiled column.
What effects the retention time? What prooperties will effect the retention times of a sample?
Dependant upon the amount of attraction between the sample and the stationary phase and the mobile phase. Its volatility.
What does each peak on a chromotagraph represent?
a volatile compound in the analysed sample.
