Polymerisation of amides Flashcards
What is a polyamide?
Polymers where the repeating units are bonded by amide links.
What is required to form a polyamide. What is the more expensive alternative?
A diaminde and a dicarboxilic acid. Dioyl dichlorides.
What type of polymerisation occurs? what does this mean?
Condensations. As each amide link is formed in the polymer, H2O is lost.
How are proteins formed?
Polymerisation of two or more amino acids.
How can the polymer chain be broken?
Use of hydrolisis will result in the breaking of the chains, meaning that they are more environmentally friendly.
What is acid hydrolisis?
Acid such as HCl used as a catalyst. Forms dicarboxylic acid and a ammonium ion.
What is alakaline hydrolisis?
Heated -OH used as a catalyst (X-OH) . Forms X salts of its monomer.
