Carboxylic acids Flashcards
When naming what position does the carbox group always fall on?
The carboxylic acid is always on the number one carbon, thus naming is always -Oic acid
How can carbox acids be water soluble? Why are they soluble?
If they are fewer than six carbons in the chain, then they are water soluble. Because hydrogen bonds will be able to form between the func group.
What is formed when a carbox acid reacts with a metal oxide?
metal salt+water
What occurs when reacted with an alkali?
A neutralisation reaction will occur forming water+salt
What happens when reacted with a carbonate?
Water+Carbon dioxide and a metal salt
What test can be used to check for the pressence of a carboxylic acid? ( relates to questioned reactions)
effervecence as the carboxylic acid reacts with a carbonate, forming gaseos CO2 will show the presence of a carboxylic acid.
Which two reactants could be used as a test for a carboxylic acid?
Either: Na2CO3 (s) or NaHCO3 (aq)
How can we form a carboxylic acid? (Reactants and their conditions)
Either a primary alcohol or an aldehyde can be refluxed with an excess oxidising agent (K2Cr2O7/H+)
