Thermoregulation Flashcards
What is hypothermia?
Condition that occurs when core body temp drops below the minimum temperature required to maintain basic metabolic function.
What are the causes of hypothermia?
- inappropriate clothing for cold weather
- exposure to cold environments such as: wind, moisture and cold water
What are the symptoms of hypothermia?
- shivering
- lack of coordination
- drowsiness
- weak pulse
- confusion
- slow breathing
What are the treatments for hypothermia?
- warm beverages
- warm heat packs or hot water bottles
- gain shelter
- remove wet clothing if needed
What is hyperthermia?
Is an elevated body temp that is due to failed thermoregulation that occurs when body is producing or absorbing more heat than it can remove.
What are the causes of hyperthermia?
- high temperatures
- humid conditions
- inadequate hydration
- inappropriate cloths for hot weather
- strenuous activity
What are the treatments for hyperthermia?
- rehydrate athlete
- move away from heat source eg sun
- fans/ air conditioning
- apply cold water/ sponges, ice pacls, towles
- repplace electrolytes
What are the symptoms of hyperthermia? (stage 1)
Heat cramps
- cramps in working muscles
- dizziness
What are the symptoms of hyperthermia? (stage 2)
Heat exhaustion
- sweating lots
- clammy, pale skin
- rapid pulse
- lightheaded
What are the symptoms of hyperthermia? (stage 3)
Heat stroke
- unconsciousness
- shock
- red skin
- rapid pulse
