Sport injuries Flashcards
What are the different types of injuries? (4)
- acute
- chronic
- sprain
- strain
What is an acute injury?
An injury that occurs suddenly without warning. This can be directly due to contact or indirectly due to technique.
What is a chronic injury?
An injury that develops slowly, is persistent and long-lasting. Often due to overuse of a particular area of the body over a period of time.
What is a sprain injury?
Damage to a ligament. When joints move further than ideal physiological range.
What is a strain injury?
Damage to a muscle. Injured by eccentric loading or plyometric movements.
What is the difference between an indirect and direct acute injury?
Direct injuries result from an external force such as a collision or blow, whereas an indirect injury is caused by a sudden change in direction or intensity where the force is greater than the muscle can sustain.
What is an example of an indirect acute injury?
- dislocation
- hyperextension
What is an example of an direct acute injury?
- collision (getting tackled)
- blow ( hockey stick)
Explain grade 1-3 ligament sprain.
- grade 1: mild damage
- grade 2: partial tear
- grade 3: complete tear
Explain grade 1-3 muscle strain.
- grade 1: comprises damage to less than 5% of the muscle fibres
- grade 2: involves more intensive damage than grade 1 but not ruptured
- grade 3: complete rupture of the muscle
What is an example of chronic injury?
- Shin splints
- elbow tendinitis
What are the factors that lead to overuse injuries?
Repetitive nature of activity, insufficient recovery time between sessions, increase in training load, poor foot wear or training surface.
What are ways to prevent sport injuries?
- warm up
- strength training
- weight training
- cool downs
