Thermoregulation Flashcards
Vasodilation
Capillaries widen near the surface of the skin more blood flows near the surface of the skin and less blood flows through the shunt valve, causing increased thermal energy loss/ energy loss by radiation, cooling the body down
Sweating
Sweat released onto the skin is evaporated, transferring thermal energy
Vasoconstriction
Capillaries constrict near the surface of the skin less blood flows near the surface of the skin and more blood flows through the shunt valve, minimising thermal energy loss/ energy loss by radiation
Shivering
Muscles contract, releasing heat energy
Piloerection
Erector muscles contract, causing the hairs to stand on end, trapping body temperature air
Where is the thermal regulatory centre located?
Hypothalamus
Temperature receptors
-temperature receptors monitoring blood temperature
-skin receptors send signals to the hypothalamus
Thermoregulation
Controls internal body temperature (37°) so enzymes work optimumly
