Blood Flashcards
Artery
-carry blood away from the heart
-thick, elastic walls to cope with high pressure
-narrow lumen to maintain high pressure
Vein
-valves to prevent backflow of blood
-wide lumen
Capillary
One cell thick wall for diffusion of minerals
Plasma
Carries everything
Red blood cells
-bioconcave (high SA)
-no nucleus (haemoglobin)
White blood cells
-engulf pathogens
-produce antibodies
-produce antitoxins
Platelets
Clot blood
Artificial blood
-adds volume so heart can pump
-can’t carry oxygen
Blood flow rate
Blood flow rate = blood (ml) / time (mins)
Why is there a change in blood flow rate to some muscles during exercise?
There is increased blood flow to the muscles to allow for respiration
