Thermohaline Circulation Flashcards
What is thermohaline circulation?
Thermohaline circulation, is the combined effect of surface, and subsurface currents that connect to form a huge conveyor belt that moves around the world.
What is thermohaline circulation responsible for?
It’s responsible for transferring heat around the world
Does cold water sink or float?
Sink
Does hot/warm water float or sink?
Float
Does freshwater float or sink?
Floats
Does salt water float or sink?
Sink
Surface currents are caused by?
Wind
What are subsurface currents caused by?
The changes in density (salinity + temperature)
How does salinity affect water density ?
The higher the salinity, the denser the water is, causing it to sink
How does temperature affect water density?
Colder water is more dense causing it to sink
Cold water and hot water create?
Currents
Salt water and freshwater create?
Currents
