Q

Where do oil, and natural gas come from?

A

Oil, and natural gas comes from dead marine animals and algae. They then get covered in sediments, and eventually turn into oil. (cuz of pressure)

Q

Where does coal come from?

A

Coal, comes from all the dead animals and algae that once lived in swamps. That got covered in sediments, and compressed it into coal.

Q

How do fossil fuel energy plants work?

A

Long story short, people mine fossil fuels, then burn them to produce thermal energy. It then is transformed into mechanical, then electric energy.

Q

What are the disadvantages to fossil fuels ?

A
  • it’s non renewable
  • the combustion releases carbon dioxide (causes global warming)
  • natural gas releases methane (again global warming)
  • the combustion also releases sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides (causes acid rain)
  • fossil fuels also will run out in a few decades (non reliable)

Q

How do nuclear power plants work?

A

The nucleus of uranium is split, releasing nuclear energy. Which is then transformed into thermal energy, then mechanical energy, then lastly electric energy.
( nucleus of uranium split. nuclear - thermal - mechanical - electric )

Q

How do geothermal power plants work ?

A

The thermal energy from magma, is transferred to a liquid, turning into steam. It then goes through a turbine transforming it into mechanical energy, and then into a generator turning it into electrical energy.
(thermal - liquid - steam - mechanical - electrical)
