Energy Resources, Disadvantages And Advantages Flashcards
What are three energy resources from the lithosphere?
1) Fossil Fuels
2) Nuclear energy
3 Geothermal energy
What do fossil fuels consist of ?
- Coal
- Natural Gas
- Oil
Where do oil, and natural gas come from?
Oil, and natural gas comes from dead marine animals and algae. They then get covered in sediments, and eventually turn into oil. (cuz of pressure)
Where does coal come from?
Coal, comes from all the dead animals and algae that once lived in swamps. That got covered in sediments, and compressed it into coal.
How do fossil fuel energy plants work?
Long story short, people mine fossil fuels, then burn them to produce thermal energy. It then is transformed into mechanical, then electric energy.
What are the advantages to fossil fuel energy?
Uh NONE
What are the disadvantages to fossil fuels ?
- it’s non renewable
- the combustion releases carbon dioxide (causes global warming)
- natural gas releases methane (again global warming)
- the combustion also releases sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides (causes acid rain)
- fossil fuels also will run out in a few decades (non reliable)
Where does nuclear energy come from?
Nuclear energy comes from uranium. (a radioactive element, found in the lithosphere)
How do nuclear power plants work?
The nucleus of uranium is split, releasing nuclear energy. Which is then transformed into thermal energy, then mechanical energy, then lastly electric energy.
( nucleus of uranium split. nuclear - thermal - mechanical - electric )
What are the advantages of nuclear energy ?
- it’s efficient
- emits very little greenhouse gases
- produces a large amount of energy
What are the disadvantages of nuclear energy ?
- it’s non renewable
- it’s dangerous
Where does Geothermal energy come from?
Geothermal energy comes from magma, under the earths crust.
How do geothermal power plants work ?
The thermal energy from magma, is transferred to a liquid, turning into steam. It then goes through a turbine transforming it into mechanical energy, and then into a generator turning it into electrical energy.
(thermal - liquid - steam - mechanical - electrical)
What are the advantages to Geothermal energy?
- it’s renewable
- it does NOT release greenhouse gases
What are the disadvantages to Geothermic energy?
- it’s expensive
- it’s only used in volcanic areas
