Combustion & The Fire Triangle Flashcards
What is combustion?
Combustion is a form of oxidation that releases a large amount of energy.
(Oxidation = reaction involving oxygen)
What are the three things needed for combustion to occur ? Why?
1) An Oxidant, to cause a fuel to react
2) A Fuel, when combined w oxidant releases a lot of energy (ex coal, wood)
3) The Ignition Temperature/ heat, the temperature needed for combustion to start.
What are the three types of combustion?
1) Rapid combustion. (happens quickly, releases a lot of energy mainly light and heat) ex. Campfire
2) Spontaneous combustion. (Is rapid combustion, that starts without an outside source) ex. Forest fires
3) Slow combustion. (happens very slowly, and energy is released gradually) ex. Rust
